Norfolk -The Shieling

We awoke to bright sunlight. I opened the blinds to dazzling sun on sea. Ians turn to feed Misty and it was  blustery out on the cliff path. I just lazed in bed looking at the view. We had a crossword off (I forgot who won again) then breakfasted on porridge and hot cross buns before preparing for departure.

I was very impressed with Sandy Gulls. Only downside was ot was a bit of a trek to the toilet block. Otherwise a near perfect site, especially as its adults only! 9/10.
As our next site was quite close we decided to call at Sheringham Hall on the way. Sir Georgie Kelly led us astray a bit in Cromer Town centre, but Ian rescued the situation with aplomb. The kind man at the hall let us park in the bus parking and we had a lovely walk through the grounds.

Back at the cafe, we had coffee and ice cream before heading to our next place. Firstly we had to go down Old Woman Lane which is about two foot wide and like the M25. How Ian managed I’ll never know! The shieling is a certified location near Cley. It’s all grass. It’s on a slope. The grass was sodden. Oh what fun we had! ‘Try pitch three and see how you get on’ said Mark, the  amiable owner. Fifty donuts later we decided on pitch five, down by the hedge on a lesser slope. We are set too for a couple of days but not sure if we will get out!!!

A rest was in order after the stress so we had a cup of tea in the open air before the heavens opened again. Safe inside the hail started. Big fat hailstones. Luckily all was bright and clear by 6.30. We both showered in the little shed, this is one of those CLs that has facilities, before setting off for the George and Dragon in the centre of Cley. I really enjoyed the food and the ambience. Ian had hake in a haricot bean sauce, much nicer than it sounds, and I went for good old fish and chips. We had a window table, all the better for people watching, although the main road through Cley is closed leading to chaos on the North Norfolk Coast, and turning Old Woman Lane into a rat run. Misty was once again the star attraction.

We also both had a pint of Woodfordes Werry, which was the first beer Ian ever brewed, for old times sake

Replete once again, we strolled the mile back along church lane, gazing in awe at the mansions along the way. Tucked tight up in Dame Shirley we watched an episode of university challenge, where Ian was on fire, before retiring to the sound of rain beating on the roof.

Strava watch

The walk around Sheringham Hall grounds was a couple of miles, then a mile each way to the pub

Nature watch

Nothing really exciting, but loads of birds flitting around the site too fast for us to identify

Neighbour watch

We’ve not yet introduced ourselves to the couple sat comfily outside their caravan watching Ian put deep grooves on the field

  1. Glad dad is such a calm and good driver, I’d be stuck forever in the mud of pitch 3 😅
