Lickpenny - A walk into Matlock

I was awoken around 5am by Sally, the bedroom TV, flashing red and blue. I fumbled about for the control and pushed a few buttons to stop the rave. I drifted back off before being awoken again. One of our neighbours was going for the early 7am departure. Lots of crunching of tyres on gravel and a barking dog. Next time I woke up it was 8.30 and Ian was preparing the coffee.

We did some lazing around as the weather had taken a turn for the worse and rain was pounding on Dame Shirls roof. Then it was time for a nice Full English.

Full English

We had planned a walk into Matlock but I wasn’t looking forward to it in the rain and the cold, but by the time we were ready the rain had petered out and there was a weak sun peaking through the clouds.

The path into Matlock started along the usual motorway before heading onto a quiet bit of uphill road. After that it was three miles downhill. There were a few short showers but mostly the weather was kind and I really enjoyed it.

A pleasant path

As we came into town we spotted an exciting sign, of which we took full advantage.

Just what we need!

Taking advantage of The Wishing Stone

We had a little look around Matlock then found a cafe for a coffee and cake. Very nice it was too. It was just beginning to rain again when we ordered an Uber to take us back up the hill. It was chucking it down when we got back to Dame Shirley. We battoned down the hatches and settled down to watch ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ on Netflix, which was very enjoyable.

I rustled up a Charlie Binghams butter chicken for tea. (You didn’t think I hadn’t packed it did you?). After that it was still banging down so we watched Emma Thompson swearing a lot more. Someone also got chopped into pieces with a hacksaw. Then we settled down to watch Scotland fail to qualify for the World Cup again. Blow me, they only went and did it, much to our annoyance. Never mind, it will be fun watching them lose to Curacao next summer.

Butter Chicken and a nice Merlot

Filthy weather

Then it was bedtime, all nice and cosy in Dame Shirley, despite the nasty weather outside.

Notable Events

We had water in the cutlery tray under the sink. Ian detected that the drain had come loose so got a big spanner we have been carrying about for three years. He soon mended it and we are dry again.

We have new neighbours with the biggest satellite dish you have ever seen on their roof. It is continually spinning this way and that. MI5 I have deduced.

We are very much enjoying Emma Thompson and wanted to go for the next episode, only to find out that one comes out every week and we have caught up! It’s like the 70s!
