The Lakes - Knaresborough

Last year we had a wonderful week at the Caravan and Motorhome club site in Keswick. We liked it so much that on the way home I booked again for this year. I booked so far in advance because we wanted one of the lakeside ‘premier’ pitches. Alas, I was too late for any weekends, but we managed to get a Monday to Friday spot. Perfect. This gave us a chance to visit two more new (to us) sites on the way there and back. We chose Knaresborough for the outward journey. Always looked a nice little site, plus it’s right by the Nidd Gorge.

So on the Friday we safely ensconced Grandma in Whiston Lodge, packed up Dame Shirley, waved bye bye to Chris and all the dogs, and set off around 2pm in, I have to say, rather nice weather. We were planning on some cycling so decided against taking St Monty. But don’t feel too sorry for Chris, as Kathy, Einar and Sam were coming down to help out. He did need that help as it transpires.

Ooh, an unattended biscuit!

A quick hour and a half journey later and we were rolling into Knaresborough club site. It is exactly as described. Lovely. A very warm welcome was had from the wardens before we were pointed in the direction of the Service Pitch section. We are going luxury service all the way this week. We chose pitch 64, got set up, and were relaxing in our super chairs in the 24 degree heat in about half an hour. The holiday had begun.

Hot, hot, hot

The love of Ian’s life

After some rest and relaxation in the sun, and a little afternoon nap, we decided on a walk to the gorge before tea. We crossed the road outside the camp site and walked along a bit before coming to the Nidd Gorge Car Park. As we set off down the path we were greeted by several soaking wet dogs coming the other way. Misty would have loved it! Down at the bottom there was a lovely bridge. We crossed to the other side and had a walk along the river before returning to the site.

Beautiful Nidd Gorge

Knaresborough Caravan and Motorhome club has another excellent feature. It has a small bar and cafe attached to reception. As we approached from our walk we could see loads of people sat outside enjoying a pint in the sun so decided to join them. We got talking to a couple from Hertfordshire on their way to Edinburgh, which passed a lovely half hour. We also noticed that everyone had dogs. Our pitch is also right next to the dog walk entrance. We are pining for a dog! Monty is definitely coming to Northumberland in July. Sadly, too involved in the conversation, I didn’t take a photo. There’s always tomorrow.

For tea I rustled up Quiche, Baked potato, and beans, which we ate in the sun, still 23 degrees at 7.30!

Quiche and tatties

You may be wondering why Ian didn’t put the canopy out. Well that’s my fault. I had read that there was a risk of storms overnight, a small risk in Knaresborough but a risk nevertheless, and persuaded him to wait. I also made him pack all the outside furniture away and batton down the hatches when we came in. Can’t be too careful. We also decided to use the inner blinds instead of the outer blankie, no extra warmth needed tonight!

After an attempt at watching ‘The Diplomat’ on Netflix, which Ian thought not bad and I wasn’t enamoured with, I left Ian reading and retired to my cosy bedroom.

Musings

We are the only motorhome on the posh bit. Caravanners must be richer.
We love our new birdsong apps (more later)
A pub on a campsite is a lovely addition in hot weather
Always wise to use sunscreen
Swimming dogs are lovely
Pidgeons get everywhere, and are very noisy

Comments

  1. I feel like the photo doesn’t really do Amy’s biscuit stealing height justice. It must be over 4ft high!

  2. Heather reminds me that when we visited Knaresborough we saw The Chapel in the Rock and St Robert’s Cave and walked between the two!
