The lakes - Cycling

Fathers Day! So I had to be the children and get up and make the coffee. I also had to be the children and make a Full English. We ate outside in the sun and, I have to say, it was delicious.

Father’s Day Full English

We had decided to go for a bike ride today, along the main road into Knaresborough, then follow The Beryl Burton Way, part of which we walked yesterday, to Ripley. Then we would return the same way. After much pfaffing we were all ready to depart around 1pm. Not bad for us. I have to say the main road was horrible, really busy and a bit hairy for me. We crossed the viaduct bridge and branched off onto the cycleway. Much better. A lovely path, the last half following an old railway, right to Ripley Castle. Good old Beryl Burton. Ripley Castle is not open to the public unless you have an appointment with Historic Houses. It does have a tea room though. We sat outside in the sun and partook of cake and coffee.

At this point we took a look at the map and decided that instead of going back to Knaresborough and along the hairy main road (12 mile total), we would continue following NCR 65 then branch off and back to the camp site from the North, all on minor roads (24 mile total). It was an inspired decision. The route was lovely, the roads quiet, and we found a pub for a (soft) drink along the way.

Lovely National Cycle Route 65

A pub (with no alcohol beer)

We also came across a slippery looking Ford, where Ian had to carry the bikes over a style, a steep, downward, narrow path in a wood, where I had to get off and push, and a no through road. All in the life of a Sunday cyclist.

The long way round

We arrived back at the site as I was just about at my limit, with tired legs and a sore bum. We had both really enjoyed the day though. Glad we didn’t risk the scary hairy road.

I showered then rustled up a ready made curry, no time for an afternoon nap sadly, before we settled down to watch The Diamond League athletics. Another world record for Mondo Duplantis in the pole vault. Then, exhausted, I fell into bed, with a blooming fly buzzing around!

  1. The red kite swooped and caught something on the road 10ft after Jackie had cycled past (she didn’t see it as she can’t look back!!!).
