Keswick - Walla Crag

Image
During the night I needed to go to the loo. Unusual for me but hey ho. Sadly I noticed that our toilet was at defcom red meaning I couldn’t use it. Alas this necessitated a walk over to the facilities. The good thing was that I noticed a fabulous sunrise as I walked back to dame Shirley. Lovely!  As expected we awoke to no rain, but it was very cold. We did the usual pfaffing before I produced a bacon and egg sarnie for breakfast. After more pfaffing and preparing we set off on our activity for the day. A walk up Walla Crag. We had picked up a leaflet in the information centre with a nice looking route on it so we followed this. It took us through the centre of Keswick and out through some fields and up a big hill. Almost at the top we could go through a gate onto a rocky path on the edge of the cliff, or carry on by a wall and up a gentler, longer slope. Guess what, I went for the cliff edge! At this point the views were stunning, and the cliff side covered with Heather. On ...

Keswick - Rain

Image
It was Saturday. Park run day. Ian had decided to get up early and compete. It was along the old railway line where we cycled a couple of days ago. I stayed in bed and lazed. He returned not too long after leaving with a big smile and a new personal best. Well done Ian! We had decided that, as rain was forecast, we wouldn’t do too much today. After Ian showered we had a nice breakfast of porridge and sausage sandwiches left over from the barbecue. At this point we were still able to sit outside. Indeed we had a nice conversation with our good pal from next door who had already been out. He had been on the bus when it hit the ice cream man’s sign due to a bad woman driver.  We then had a bit of a stroll into town, where, being Saturday in Keswick, you couldn’t move. There were a lot of Italian school kids causing bottlenecks. We bought some nice cakes for lunch. As we returned to the site, just before one, the queue of new motorhomes and caravans waiting to get in stretched fo...

Keswick - The bikes are out, again!

Image
At last, some sunshine! While the rest of the country basked in record sweltering heat, we in Keswick had been feeling a little left out. But this morning the sun was streaming through the blinds and it actually felt warm. We had decided to get the bikes off again and cycle a bit further down the West side of Derwentwater. Plenty of pfaffing ensued before I walked down to Booths in town for a few vittels. Luckily part of my pfaffing had been looking at the news. Apparently the world was in chaos because some windows spywear firm had pushed a wrong button. ‘I think I will take some cash’ I said to Ian as I left. A young man was standing in Booths open doorway turning people away. ‘Cash only today. There has been a wrong button pressed at a windows spywear firm!’ It was very quiet in Booths where I got a baguette and croissants for breakfast.  It was a fine breakfast. Sat outside Dame Shirley staring at the hills with the sun beaming down saying ‘This is the life!’. We sat and ...

Keswick - The bikes are out

True to the vagaries of this summer, we awoke to a chill in the air. I say awoke, we eventually awoke. We had a lovely lie in till about 8.30. We miss Misty but it does mean no one has to get up when she does. After pfaffing I prepared a full English which we ate outside, wearing jumpers.  Nice full English More chilling ensued, before Ian got chatting to a passing man who had a motorhome that didn’t suit him. That took a while. Eventually we started to prepare for a bike ride. That also took time. Incidentally I ended up wearing two jumpers it was so cold. In the end it was about 2pm before we set out from the site to brave the Keswick traffic. Keswick is very very busy, but we did manage to arrive at our start point just about alive. There was an incident involving a large muddy puddle and one of Ian’s running shoes, but he battled on manfully.  We were planning to cycle along an old railway line, starting at the old station, then along some tiny roads to the old Castl...

Keswick - Brassed Off!

Image
We awoke to a glorious morning, the sun was shining and the birds were singing. Perfect weather for a little walk. After beating Ian at the crossword off for the third day in a row I prepared some porridge and toast which we ate on the huge piece of grass by Dame Shirley. We then proceeded to prepare ourselves. Sun tan lotion. Oats so simple. Smidge. And an insect repellent bracelet. Take that you little devils!  It was a mere 10.30 when we left the site and headed for the launch jetty. Luckily we bought our ticket and jumped straight on the next boat, although it was heaving. Standing on the dock   I am sailing We were headed for High Brindlehow landing at the bottom of the lake and a walk up through Borrowdale to Castle Crag. The boat trip was really nice in the sun, with amazing views as expected. Once on the jetty we began the fun part, navigating. Wherever we go we seem to have trouble with navigation, and sure enough it wasn’t long before we were consulting the map...
