Summer in Devon - Windmills

It rained very heavily in the night. Even I woke up! Although I do like to hear the sound. Ian leapt up to ensure all the vents were closed. Come morning you wouldn’t know as the sun was shining and it was hot, hot, hot. Ian took Misty off past Cujo to the dog field and returned to say that her rabbit chasing days are over. Apparently two were sat within ten feet of her nonchalantly munching grass. She never noticed. I rustled up some nice bacon and eggs to eat in the sunshine, before Vicky came a calling to take us out for the day.

Bacon and eggs

We had decided on a visit to Wilton windmill, the other side of Marlborough, as Vicky had seen the sign many times and fancied visiting. Alas, we missed the sign and ended up half way to Swindon, eventually we were back on track and arrived to find a tempting job offer for all of us.

A bit far

We had a good look around the windmill, despite being eaten alive by creatures, before setting off on the round walk to Crofton pumping engine.

Windmill

We took the Roman Road to Crofton, and were about to walk along the canal to the engine when we found a fly in the ointment. The towpath was closed. We had to take a detour through a meadow, where Misty ran like the wind in excitement. That too was swarming with creatures. The path brought us to the chocolate box village of Wilton, full of thatched cottages (never buy one says Vicky) and a quaint English pub that finished serving food about ten minutes before we got there. We did have a drink that nearly bankrupt Ian.

The expensive pub

As we set off back to the car, we rounded a corner to find a field full of ostriches. They rushed over when they saw us, obviously in hopes of being fed. They then proceeded to bob up and down behind the wall. We couldn’t stop laughing!

Ostriches

We had hoped to find a pub or cafe open on our drive back, but Wiltshire has a dearth of eateries that open between two and six, so we needed up having a snack at the Three Magpies by the camp site.

Food in a basket

Sated, Vicky came round for a quick coffee before departing for Rotherham. She had a date with Lee Frecklington and Ben Pringle on the Friday and needed time to prepare. Ian and I chilled then showered before heading indoors as the weather turned a bit nippy

Ian made friends with the guy in the very natty VW camper van next door. He was going on a 50 mile bike ride once he could get away! There was a couple in the very same tent as Vicky and Alex’s further down the road.

Comments

  1. They were emus not ostriches, and Alex/Chris I could have taken them easily. I will post a video of Misty showing Vicky a clean pair of paws on WhatsApp
