Leek - The Roaches

Don’t worry Kathy and Vicky, Dame Shirley isn’t infested! The Roaches are a range of strange rock formations close to the camp site that we had planned to walk.

We woke bright and early. About four am early as we had forgotten to close one of the roof blinds leading to us being blinded by the scorchio sun. We did manage to get a good lie in till about quarter to eight though. The traffic noise didn’t disturb us after all. My turn for Misty so I fed her and took her for a drag around the dog walk. It is covered in wood chip and she does not like it. We lazed in bed and had a crossword off. Then we were up and at it for a cooked breakfast under the awning.

Replete we prepared to depart for our walk, but sadly as we set off we noticed Misty was limping. We decided to leave her behind in Dame Shirley.

It was a great walk nevertheless. Despite the scorchio forecast it was perfect weather, not too hot and a bit breezy on the top. We set off along the motorway in the other direction, and soon came to a footpath up to the village of Upper Holme. Upper Holme is very up!

Here’s another trail we were on

Over a bridge on the footpath by the expressway

From there it was a hike along a road till we came to the main bit, The Roaches themselves. We climbed up, along a ridge, back, then down. Here’s the tale in pictures.

Then back to this. Phew.

We made it back down to the road soon after, and called at the Upper Hulme cafe for a nice coffee before heading back down the footpath to the turnpike, then back to Dame Shirl where Misty was waiting patiently.

We had planned to call at a pub for tea but abandoned that plan due to Misty, so I rustled up some emergency ravioli before we watched another two episodes of happy valley (we only have one to go) and turned in

OS watch

A good distance for my walk1000 today, and a long way up too!

  1. What lovely walk. Well done Jackie. Did you see Don Willian’s Hut?

  2. What a lot of up and down. It looks great though. How is Misty?

  3. We did see the hut but the gate said ‘private’ so I didn't dare go in! That was the big rock Ian climbed. Misty is ok on the grass but limping on hard ground.
