We were off to The North today. We were out of milk so had boiled eggs for breakfast before showering and preparing Dame Shirley. The sun wasn’t shining so brightly, in fact we had a quick rain shower, the first one on this holiday. We parked up on the main road in Seaton Sluice to visit the little co-op for milk and a few other vittels. No time to visit Castle Starlight though. Sorry David!
We had decided to call at Druridge Bay Country Park as it was about half way in our long One Hour journey. The car park is right behind sand dunes leading to the beach. Once again a long expanse of golden sand with hardly anyone on it.
Northumberland
We walked down a bit before coming back along the sand dunes. It was so sunny by now we had to remove our coats
Dunes
By chance we came across the park cafe so had a spot of lunch and an ice cream by the lake. In the hot sun.
Coffee by the lake
Back at Dame Shirley we pushed on for our base for the next four nights. Dunstan Hill camp site near the little village of Embleton. We were shown to our pitch by a lovely lady who told Ian off for speeding! It’s right by the dog walk gate. ‘Go through the gate, turn right, and the path takes you to the beach’ she explained. Marvellous. Because we were staying four nights we got out the big guns. Ian pegged down the awning to within an inch of its life. I got out the shoe box. We set up the table and chairs. And the piece de resistance was laid down. The outside mat. Home away from home.
While I made some cups of tea, Ian made friends with the guy in the Motorhome opposite. With Ian it’s a bit like when the kids are little and you go to a caravan site. They have friends within minutes of arriving. It’s lovely!
After the cuppa we decided to stroll down to the beach as the lady had advised. Through the wood we came to a field and at the top of that was a fabulous view over to Dunstanborough Castle.
The Castle
Through the golf course and we were on the beach. You guessed it. Long stretch of golden sand practically deserted.
We walked back trough Embleton in the hope of finding somewhere to eat, or at least to quench our thirst, and stumbled upon the Dunstanborough hotel. Dog friendly they put us in a little snug and fed us some lovely food, with really pleasant staff. Unfortunately I was having such a good time eating and drinking I forgot to take an inside photo.
The Hotel
Replete, we strolled back along the main road to Dunstan Hill and Dame Shirley, all lit up like Blackpool Illuminations. We have to use those powerful outside lights sometimes!
We sat outside in the heat for coffee. Sadly, the bright lights drew the world population of daddy long legs and Ian was tasked with ejecting them while I watched bake off. If asked to do some feathering on a biscuit what would you do? I guarantee it would not be what some of the bakers did! Oh how we laughed. Time for bed for me then, leaving Ian to one of his favourites, First Dates Hotel.
Neighbour watch
Ians mate opposite is very nice. An HGV driver by trade from Holmfirth way who knows all the staff at Peter Roberts caravans. Their Motorhome has two single beds. Next door we have an old couple who don’t speak much. Never saw the other side.
Wildlife watch
A stoat
Some hares
Oystercatchers
Skein of geese
Gulls
Sparrows
I’m back to forgetting the start again!
We walked along the beach to join the circle near the top
Once again, join the circle!
