Scarborough - A long walk

Image
We awoke to another lovely day in paradise. After conversations with Wooly, Ian decided he would love to walk a bit of the Cleveland way, up as far as Hayden Wyke. 12 miles is a bit much for me in my dotage, so I agreed on a taxi there and walk back. The day before I had been bitten, so today I doused myself in sun cream, then oats so simple, then 100% non earth saving DEET. Take that flies. We had booked a taxi via the Nippy Taxi app, so walked down to reception for the alloted 12.30 pick up. Bang on Nippy arrived. A very nice Leeds United fan (oxymoron I know) who is off to Dublin for a friendly vs AC Milan next week. We are playing Accrington Stanley! He dropped us off at the Hayden Wyke Inn where we intended to get some lunch. It was absolutely heaving. It is in a lovely spot, by the sea and on the cinder path cycle track from Scarborough to Whitby. We decided on the carvery then sat outside in the sun.  Sunday carvery in the sun After a bit of chilling we set off to walk back ...

Scarborough - The Human League

Image
I had bought Ian (and myself) tickets to see the Human League at Scarborough Open Air Theatre for Christmas, and the weekend had finally arrived. I had booked into the Camping and Caravanning club Scarborough Site for three nights as it’s within walking distance of the Theatre. When I had booked last year, the worry was the weather. Lots of things could ruin a show at an Open Air Theatre. Luckily, we were still in the middle of a heatwave,  a tropical heatwave! Ian had to go in to work for a few hours on the Friday, but true to his new loosey goosey semi retirement, he was back sooner than I was expecting. We had a sandwich then waved goodbye to Kathy and all the dogs and pointed Dame Shirley in the direction of Scarborough. Friday afternoon so loads of traffic and hold ups, but Sir Georgie gave us some alternative routes and we arrived around 3.30. I had discovered that Saturday was to be the Veterans Day Parade in Scarborough, and the wardens had done a great job of commemorating...

The Lakes - Levens Hall

Image
Overnight had been forecast thunderstorms, but we had none, just the soothing pitta patta of rain on Dame Shirley’s roof. In a startling turnaround, Ian made porridge for breakfast, then went outside to do his back exercises. This resulted in a meeting of all the men on Lakeside Heights. He found out that the Scots were leaving, back home for a couple of weeks then over to Switzerland and Austria. I’m jealous. He had also googled the guys bike, £12,500 pounds worth! And they both had two. The TV man had succeeded in getting a signal, much to his delight, and the Cottingham two had a horrendous journey where he had to reverse up a narrow lane with his caravan. World put to rights I made a request. We had a bike ride planned for later but I fancied a walk by the river. For some reason Ian, who wears his walking boots if he’s taking Misty over the road, decided to wear his sandals. Who am I to judge? We walked up to one bridge then crossed and walked along the other side, crossing ba...

The Lakes - Sizergh Castle

We awoke to yet another glorious day. Happily, my insect wound had receded slightly overnight. Looks like I would live. It was spewing out pus at an alarming rate though. I’m glad the insect is dead. Our friends who love River Breamish departed early, as did the little, Johnny come lately, camper van on the end. The Scots (we have spoken to them, they are definitely Scottish) who own the lovely old guide dog, got out some heinously expensive looking bikes, clipped on their cleats, donned their Dunfermline Wheelies cycling jersies, and left poor old Bozo in the van for a, I suspect, long ride. That left just us on Lakeland Heights, and we hadn’t even breakfasted! Maybe we should get up a bit earlier?  After some chilling Ian got out his yoga mat to begin the lengthy process. He decided to put it at the front as we were alone on The Heights. No sooner had he splayed out than a couple came round on bikes. They were examining prospective other pitches as they didn’t like theirs. ...

The Lakes - Kendal

Moving day. But still a heatwave. I awoke with a huge, red, hot, swollen arm. I had been keeping it cool with a flannel all night but it was still spreading. As I knew the exact moment it happened, 1.33 on Weds, there was no point in visiting my friendly local pharmacist for antibiotics. It needs to be 48 hrs after the bite. Never mind, I would flannel on.   Beat that Vicky! We had worked out that it was only an hour to our next site in Kendal. We had to be out of Keswick by twelve, and could not access Kendal till one. So we had to time it just right. Also we had time for a lazy morning. Once again everyone was up and about, cycling, swimming, water using. It’s lovely just to sit and watch the world go by. Porridge for breakfast again, then I had a stroll to Booths. I hadn’t noticed but we were nearly out of coffee grounds.  I decided against using the self service tills as one of the human tills only had one person in front. A bit of a delay was caused as there wa...
