Castleton - Peverel Castle

Image
I slept from turning the light out at 9.30pm, to 7.30am the next day. As the clocks went back that was 8.30 am in old money. I was definitely tired. The overnight rain had petered out to leave a glorious day. The ridge was perfectly clear and we could see lots of people walking along, presumably enjoying the view. We have put it on the list to do again on a better day. I popped over to see if we could stay a little longer than the 12noon latest departure time. Given the go ahead I cooked up a nice sausage and bacon sandwich. Cooking in Dame Shirl After breakfast a man came over to say hello. He too had a Rollerteam Zefiro 696. Ian had a nice long chat with him where they discussed their 696 faults while I washed up. He pointed out that there is a 696 Facebook group which I have applied to join. They don’t just let anyone in! We then had a lovely walk up to Peveril Castle in the sunshine.  The Keep Ian and Misty contemplate the view Mam Tor from inside the keep After we had wa...

Castleton - Mam Tor

Image
It was a bit rainy in the night, and Misty when I awoke and took Misty to the small dog walk area. There were three dogs in there and it was tricky to keep them apart with their minds on the job. We were all circling for ages. Then it was time for a Dame Shirley full English. Full English We washed up and I made a picnic and we were soon headed for a route I had seen on my OS app. As we ascended Lose Hill we began to climb through the fog/cloud and visibility became poor. We elected not to climb to the summit as we felt we would see nothing, and instead headed vaguely toward Mam Tor. At this point we lost all human contact and were worried we had become lost in the fog. At last, nearing a small wood, another couple loomed up in front of us. Phew! Half way up Lost in the fog? A welcome wood  As we exited the wood we found ourselves, at last, on the Great Ridge. Or at least I assumed we were. It was a wide path with fog/cloud on one side and fog/cloud on the other. It was busy ...

Castleton - A New Approach

Image
For our last (probably!) Dame Shirley outing of 2023, we decided on a weekend in Castleton, with the hope of a walk up Mam Tor. As Castleton is only an hours drive we decided on a new approach. Ian would work from home in the morning, then we would drive to the site, set up, and he would complete his day in the afternoon. Simples. The morning went well, with me visiting the supermarket, then grandma, then taking Monty to the woods. The departure was delayed as Ian had an online course 1-2, which overran a bit, but by 2.15 we were ready to get ready. The departure was delayed once more when Ian noticed that the electric (what else!) wasn’t working properly. After much grumbling and pushing of buttons, he decided that water had got in the connection to the wall. A bit of pulling it out, wafting it, and putting it back in, and all was well. By 2.45 we were ready for off, and had an uneventful, but pleasant, drive over to Castleton. We checked in to the Caravan and Motorhome site with...

The Lake District - Waterfalls

Image
We awoke at Thornbrook Barn to a bright, if not sunny, morning. I fed misty and took her to her own personal field to do her ablutions. It was boiled eggs for breakfast with toasted soldiers, then we lazed about not doing much of anything until around noon, when we decided to set off for the waterfalls Walk. As we headed down the road towards Ingleton a slight drizzle began, and by the time we arrived at the waterfalls it was that fine rain that wets you through. It is now £10 each to walk around the trail! With no concessions for old people!! Still, we were there and I wanted to do it. In the car park we started chatting (were accosted by!) a young man in shorts who had already been swimming in some river and taken a photo with the light just right at Bolton Abbey. He too was horrified by the price, had been with school as a child and swum in the pool under the waterfall. He wanted to know if we felt it was ok to leave his dog in the car. He was going to run around anyway. We hun...
